Hollywood actress Jennifer Lawrence claims that Hurricane Irma is nature’s judgment on the Trump Presidency. The response from Hollywood and the media: “Chirp, chirp, chirp.” Actor Kurt Cameron, an outspoken Christian, said that natural catastrophes have often been God’s methodology for getting our attention and calling us to repent. Facebook, twitter, and the media lite up with criticism, cynicism, and mocking his assessment. We can spell this response as pure H-Y-P-R-O-C-R-I-S-Y! There is silence for Jennifer Lawrence but let’s ridicule anyone who brings God or his judgment into the equation!
I’m reminded of the enhanced story of Pharaoh after watching his army drowned as they chased the children of Israel through the Red Sea. Following ten plagues, the testimony of Moses and Aaron, and now the destruction of his army one might expect him to proclaim that God’s judgment has come. Instead he shakes his head and says, “That’s the worse bit of bad luck I’ve ever experienced in my life.”
So why does Hollywood get away with such language while anyone claiming a word from God the Father and God the Son-Jesus, is mocked and roasted? The answer is all too obvious. When Hollywood speaks and criticizes a conservative president or conservation point of view they are the self-proclaimed moralists speaking the truth protecting every progressive idea and lifestyle foisted on the public in the last forty years. If, on the other hand, it truly is judgment from God then “Holy Toledo!” their ideas, lifestyles, so called morality is in trouble. They would then be forced to admit they have been wrong and even have to change their behavior.
Like Pharaoh, self-examination and repentance, is unlikely even in the face of unprecedented catastrophe! People’s ability to deceive themselves, hide their darkness, and hold onto the things they want is incredibly strong. At the same time the ability of Jesus Christ to weave through and see through hypocrisy, anti-biblical ideas, mocking and name calling, is stunning. Throughout history he has worked his will in both subtle and dramatic ways. Whether it is raising up a new leader who listens to his will or using nature or foreign armies he will bring his judgment and put us on our knees in repentance.
It is time we got over only seeing Jesus as gracious and all forgiving and see him in his totality as depicted in the Bible. Read this powerful verse from the book of Revelation and see Jesus as you many have never seen him before.
“Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.” Revelation 19:11-16
We do not serve a weak impotent Lord who overlooks our evil and sinfulness. We serve a living Lord who HATES SIN and arrogance. A Lord who will not be intimidated by anyone. A Lord who will hold us all accountable to our words and actions. I cannot say with 100% certainty where the chaos of nature is coming from at this time. But I can say with 100% certainty that the same God who judged Pharaoh and Israel is still the same God on the throne today. It is time to get serious and get on our knees and repent.
