WHY IS WASHINGTON D.C. IN CHAOS?

Virtually every hour another politician, actor, media person is being accused of sexual harassment. Just a couple of days ago many women came forward accusing Judge Roy Moore, running for U.S. Senate, of unwanted sexual advances. Today Senator Al Franken of Minnesota has been accused of unwanted touching and advances on a young woman.   Shockingly, since 1990, over 200 sexual harassment cases of U.S. Congressmen have been privately settled with your tax dollars to the tune of $15,000,000!

Why is Washington D.C. in such a mess? Washington’s elect appear to have no values except the one’s that get them elected and keep them in power. One of the major reasons the founding fathers wrote these words, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” should be obvious to all of us in this political swamp. If our rights, the purpose of this country, the vision for tomorrow is based on human desire and will then the values chaos we currently see in Washington will continue. What is even more dangerous is that removal of God as the master and giver of human rights such as life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

The problem in Washington D.C. and the leadership of this nation is that we expect God to bow to us and approve of our decisions rather than us bowing to him and doing his will. So long as we ignore God the Father, God the Son-Jesus, and God the Holy Spirit we will continue to live in chaos, racism, hatred, deception and confusion. How in the world do we return to any semblance of honoring Jesus Christ as God and Savior and make his values our values?

The progressive left has got their way in America by being the loudest voices, demanding their will be done, and intimidating anyone who stands opposed to them. That is not how followers of Jesus Christ are to behave. We must indeed be vocal, unmoving and determined to never give up but we have a greater tool that is rarely used. That tool is “On the Offensive Prayer.” Not offensive by being vulgar or mean but going on the offensive as a football team in the fourth quarter.

Several years ago I met a young adult Christian man who shared with me his first hand experience with on the offensive prayer. It seems his father chose to have an affair with his mother’s sister and the family was forever broken into pieces. Dad moved out and wanders from one women to another over the next ten years. His son, now an adult, began to pray that his father would meet Jesus face to face and have his life be changed in very specific ways.

One evening his father called him on the phone, “Please come over right now!” The son could hear the tension in his dad’s voice so he hurried over to the apartment where his dad was living with another woman.

When he walked in his dad and girlfriend were stilling on the couch physically shaking. Dishes were broken on the kitchen floor and it appeared that there had been a fight. “Dad,” he said, “what happened?”

His father stammered out a miraculous story. “We were doing dishes when Jesus suddenly appeared to both of us” he said. “I must have been holding a pile of dishes because I dropped them on the floor in wonder and amazement. He said to us, “Stop fighting against me, come and serve me with your life.”   On the spot they dedicated their lives and future to Jesus. This young man, his father and girlfriend talked a while longer and the son was both delighted and apprehensive. “Would this last?” “Was it real?”

I am happy to tell you that over ten years later his father has married that women, went and repented face to face with all that he hurt, and today is preaching the Gospel, active in the church, and teaching the Word of God. Indeed it does happen.!

What does this kind of prayer look like for those in leadership? Senator Al Franken is a good example. His values are not my values. His worldview is not my worldview. So instead of being angry and despising his role in the U.S. Senate I have chosen to pray for him in an “on the offensive mode.” I have chosen to pray in specifics for the Lord Jesus to touch and change his heart. I have been praying for months that Jesus would appear to him in a vision or dream. That Jesus would speak to him by name and turn his life around just as he did with Saul on the road to Damascus. That he would hear the voice and will of Jesus through divine appointments and promote the values of Jesus Christ.

At the same time I also pray that if he refuses to listen to the voice of Jesus, refuses to hear the truth, continues to “kick against the goads”(Acts 26:14) that he would then be removed from office and someone replace him who will listen. The events of today are a sobering reminder that Jesus is still in charge, that he will always have the final word, and that we are called to stand up for him and his kingdom above all else.

I would urge you to make a personal list of politicians, including the President, and pray specifically that Jesus would intervene in their lives. Pray for them every day. Pray that they would meet Jesus, hear his voice and adopt his values.  James 5:16 says, “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” Your prayers specifically focusing on individuals in leadership roles plus specific requests are powerful.  It is time to get on our knees for the health of this country.
