One of my favorite songs from Sunday School and Vacation Bible School days was the old classic, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so!” This is absolutely true!

At the same time this is where too many churchgoers who get their worldview, philosophy of life, and expectations based on this simplistic understanding. We love the Jesus who holds lambs, plays with children, and loves us unconditionally but really get upset when we discover all the truths and characteristics of this Jesus that make us uneasy, uncomfortable, and demand a response! In all truth, the full-blown version of Jesus, revealed in the Bible, is nothing but a pain in the neck for most adults. If you don’t believe me take moment to a listen to Jesus’ own words:

Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?

Luke 9:23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

John 5:39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,

John 8:23: And He said to them, “You are from beneath; I AM from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.

John 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

John 10:9: “I AM the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.”

John 11:25: Jesus said to her, “I AM the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 17:3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

Acts 4:12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

 According to Jesus:

  • He claims we are lost in our sins and headed for eternal death….
  • To truly love Jesus means we die to ourselves and live for him…
  • Eternal life is found nowhere else but in the person of Jesus…
  • Jesus is God in human form…
  • Eternal life is a living relationship with God the Father and God the Son-Jesus….
  • There is no other means of salvation but Jesus….
  • Dying to yourself brings life…

Is it any wonder Jesus got into so much trouble?

  • Jesus is not tolerant of all religions,
  • rejects anyone who will not repent and die to self,
  • claims that he alone is God who brings salvation to all who submit to him,
  • demands that we obey him and live for him above all else,
  • lambasts the idea that there are many truths,
  • insists that he is the truth,
  • calls us to spend our lives bringing others to faith in him alone.

Let’s be honest. Jesus is a pain the neck for most people! The vast majority don’t really want him telling them how to live, whom to serve and what to believe. This Jesus is too radical, too revolutionary, to dangerous for most people to handle. Something tells me Jesus would not be welcomed on the T.V. show The View or at the podium during the Oscar presentations.

Too many of us are reflected in the words of Rev. Wilbur Rees:

I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please.
Not enough to explode my soul or disturb my sleep,
but just enough to equal a cup of warm milk
or a snooze in the sunshine.
I don’t want enough of God to make me love a black man
or pick beets with a migrant.
I want ecstasy, not transformation.
I want warmth of the womb, not a new birth.
I want a pound of the Eternal in a paper sack.
I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please.

Today, tomorrow, and the next day you and I must decide which Jesus we are going to follow. Are we going to follow the meek and mind Jesus of Sunday School days or are we going to serve the real Jesus of the Bible who demands that we die to ourselves and live for him alone.
