First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, on Sunday witnessed the killing of at least 26 of its members, one as young as 18-months old, during worship. The gunman, twenty-six year old Devin Patrick Kelley, went on a killing spree and was finally stopped due to a good Samaritan who confronted and shot Kelly with a rifle.

Within an hour of the shooting several Democrats were on T’V calling for more stringent gun control when in fact Kelly had been denied a legal gun permit several times by the local Sheriff’s office. Mental health officials said that someone should have recognized Kelly’s anti-social behavior and intervened. As a pastor for forty years, having worked with many troubled and dangerous people, I have discovered that “what we should have done, or what we did do” is always the Monday morning Quarterback. It is extremely hard to determine the inner hostility, evil and wickedness of another person prior to such a horrible act. Still others were speculating on his mental health as though Kelly was a victim of his own dysfunctional brain. On and on and on we go, where this will stop, nobody knows!

The secular left, science, too many in the medical community, politicians and even some pastors have dismissed the Lordship of Jesus Christ and pushed him with mockery and derision to the sidelines.  Why do we believe we can do that and still have a civil society? Have we forgotten what the Word of God makes a promise in Deuteronomy 28:15-25. In these verses are the warnings to Israel and warnings to us today. When we, and our leaders, reject the one true God and seek to be god ourselves we bring down curses and wrath from heaven. Read the following closely.

15 However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you:

16 You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country.

17 Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed.

18 The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.

19 You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out.

20 The Lord will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him.[a] 21 The Lord will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess. 22 The Lord will strike you with wasting disease, with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, with blight and mildew, which will plague you until you perish. 23 The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron. 24 The Lord will turn the rain of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed.

25 The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven, and you will become a thing of horror to all the kingdoms on earth.

SOUND FAMILIAR? So long as we keep asking the wrong questions, mocking God in Jesus Christ, attempting to be god ourselves what do we expect? While America has never been a perfect nation we attempted in our history, at least publicly, to honor the Lord God Almighty and to respect his Word. Those days are gone. The day of wrath has come upon us.

2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

What do we need to do in order to break these curses? Repent-replace our minds and views and opinions with Jesus’ mind, view and opinion. Honor the Lord both publicly and privately. Honor our neighbor and take care of one another. Spend more time seeking the Lord and his will than seeking our personal fortunes. The more we do these things the more healing will come to America.

If we want to keep playing games and ignoring the real issues facing America then just keep on watching CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX and a host other media pundits rerunning the same old phrases hoping they will solve these new problems. On the other hand, if we will get on our knees, repent of our arrogance, seek the mind of Jesus and proclaim his truth we will be healed and blessed.

The choice is ours. The Old Testament leader Joshua summed it up accurately. Choose today, said Joshua, whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15
