One of the tragedies of partisan politics is the inability to see your own flaws while you have perfect vision for the flaws of your opponents. Years ago I hear a cute and powerful story that illustrates how we can get locked into a way of thinking and completely miss our own sins and shortcoming.

It seems that a duck hunter purchased a new dog for hunting. First time out the hunter shoots a duck and commands the dog to swim out and bring the dead duck back to shore. However instead of swimming this dog walks on the water, picked up the duck and came back. The hunter was astounded. “Wow,” he thought, “A dog that walks on water!”

The next day he took his cynical hunting buddy along to show off the new dog. Sure enough along comes a duck, shots are fired, the duck goes down and then the dog owner says to his friend, “watch this!” The dog again walks on the water and retrieves the duck. “What do you think of that?” He said to his cynical hunting buddy! His buddy shakes his head and says, “You got taken for your money, image that, a dog that can’t swim!”

When we a cynical, self-deluded, self-righteous, self-absorbed we cannot see our personal flaws, mistakes and sins but we are experts on the sins of others. Washington D.C. and the Media Elite are coming to grips with this reality in their own lives. They are experts at pointing out the sins, flaws shortcomings in others but are stumbling when it comes to their personal sin.

I am forever amazed at the folks on Facebook, the Hollywood media and the progressive left who rip President Donald Trump, calling him unfit for the office, because of his sinful words about wanting to grab a women’s body parts in a ten year old interview even though he apologized for his words. They have been beating this drum over and over and over calling him anti-woman and misogynistic. At the same time when their party (Al Franken and John Conyers) do exactly the same thing they are either silent, cautious or ready to make excuses. This is the definition of hypocrisy. The ability see and call out the sins in other but total blindness to their own sin.

St. Paul reminds us clearly in the book of Romans chapter 3:23 “for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” Notice that Paul says “ALL HAVE SINNED,” and that includes Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. In effect we are all on the Titanic when it comes to sin and we are all going to drowned no matter how loudly we scream at the sins of other folks on deck.  Paul’s message is clear: We’re all lost sinners who are going to die unless we repent and turn to Jesus for forgiveness.

It would be good if Facebook, Hollywood, TV and radio media, and politicians as well as pastors, lay men and women in the church, and all those outside the church STOPPED THE NAME CALLING and started looking in the mirror. As I close this blog I never thought I would turn to singer Michael Jackson for Biblical truth but his lyrics in the song “The Man In The Mirror” capture this truth better than anything more I could say. Take a moment to read his lyrics and then take a look in the mirror.

I’m Gonna Make A Change,
For Once In My Life
It’s Gonna Feel Real Good,
Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . . .

I’m Starting With The Man In The Mirror
I’m Asking Him To Change His Ways
And No Message Could Have Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place
Take A Look At Yourself, And Then Make A Change
