REAPING THE WHIRLWIND

The wisdom of the Bible, often overlooked, is born from two sources. The first is the heart and mind of God the Father, God the Son-Jesus, and God the Holy Spirit. The second is born out of the experiences of humanity. Written over thousands of years the Bible identifies and predicts with absolute clarity the attitude and behavior of men and women. When the Bible says the human heart is desperately wicked and beyond understanding Jeremiah 17:9, it speaks from experience and reality.

The text from Hosea 8:7 For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind, identifies one of those great Biblical insights.  Essentially the Lord is telling us, through the prophet Hosea, that if we work for selfishness, greed, division, hatred and intimidation not only will we get it but it will come back on us multiplied exceedingly. Another way to say this in contemporary language would be: if you light that match to burn down your neighbor’s garage, look out because you will burn down your house in the process! The very evil you want to inflict on others will come back to devour you.

The horrible tragic murder of fifty-eight people and the wounding of over five hundred in Las Vegas is a prime example of the atmosphere of “hatred, selfishness, bitterness, vitriol and partisanship” we have created in America. We may want to blame the NRA, gun owners, mental illness for the tragedy of Los Vegas when in fact we have created a hateful killing culture with abortion on demand, political partisanship, alternative lifestyles, a refusal to listen to one another, and unwillingness to seek God’s will. We are literally our own cancer eating away at the lifeblood of this country.

Nancy Sinatra, daughter of the late great crooner Frank Sinatra, tweeted the following after the Las Vegas shooting: The murderous members of the NRA should face a firing squad. Somehow the left feels that those who hold conservative and or biblical views are the problem! I never hear them speak of introspection, self-examination, or repentance for their attitudes! Anti-Christian views, labeling those who disagree with you as hateful, murderers, or bigoted is a sure fire way to create a wicked, evil environment where all suffer and no one listens.

Consider this real life situation. I have taken a biblical stance on homosexuality that teaches the gay lifestyle is not the will of God and is often personally destructive. Some of my friends and acquaintances have labeled me, without really knowing me, as hateful, bigoted, unloving, uncaring, and out of touch with reality. This stereotype is creating the divisions we have in our culture.

The truth is that I personally care about and deeply love men and women caught in the gay lifestyle. In fact I have ministered to many, helped them with life needs, and tragically buried prematurely those who contact AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.   My heart, life, door and money has always been open to assist those who are gay with personal needs. At the same time I have taken a biblical position with Jesus on this topic because I believe Jesus knows better than we do what is good and what is destructive for us.

I urge those in the gay community and those who support this lifestyle to stop using such alienating language. Know in fact that we love you enough to speak the truth of Jesus Christ. True love is honest and genuine. It is persistence and unrelenting. It is powerful and life changing. Remember the words of Jesus, “For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.” Matthew 7:2

It is time what we all seek the truth rather than partisan views. Seeking the truth, no matter where it leads, is life producing. Choose to be a life-giver rather than a life-taker. Choose to not sow the wind but to sow the truth of Jesus Christ.
