The book of Revelation 22:18-19 concludes with these words, “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.”
The warning is clear: Do not confuse, add or delete from the message of Jesus Christ. He is the living Lord who is not to be treated in a flippant or trifling manner.
If our opinion of Jesus, our characterization, turns Jesus into a weak, vacillating, accepting of everything and everything goes person, then we have nothing to be concerned about if this matches the Jesus of the Bible. On the other hand if our opinion of Jesus is false, diluted, a product of our imagination, then we have everything to be concerned about. Jesus is called the Lion of the Tribe of Judah for a reason. He is not to be trifled with, mischaracterized, or ignored, if you call a Lion by any other name or characteristic that does not change the reality of the Lion. In just the same way you can turn Jesus into your opinion and ignore the truth and his words in the Bible, BUT THAT DOES NOT CHANGE HIS REALITY!
The premise of this book is to identify the Jesus of our opinion and then to contrast this image with the real Jesus of the Bible and the biblical pronouncements of who he is and what he has accomplished. This may challenge some of the reader’s most closely held beliefs. It may be disturbing to others. The author merely asks that you approach the Bible and this book with a mind and spirit that is keen to know the truth and as a result, come closer to the real Jesus. Never forget that “my opinion” is often the best friend of the darkness! So we begin a journey into the cultural darkness regarding Jesus but with the expectation that Jesus’ light will illuminate our hearts and minds.
