The news today from Las Vegas is beyond shocking! 59 dead and over 527 wounded at a Country and Western music concert. This appears to be the result of one shooter who positioned himself in a hotel room, 32nd flood, that overlooked the concert venue. His act of premeditated evil, he had been in preparation for days, is something we have not witnessed before in America but tragically could become the new norm.
Over the next couple of weeks we are going to hear professional after professional speculate about the shooters mental health, environment, and disenfranchisement. That diagnosis will miss the point! The answer is as old as the Bible: the man was angry and chose the path of evil to satisfy his wrath.
The Bible uses the term “evil” 520 times and the term “wicked” 303 times. It is not due to the fact that the writers of the Bible did not understand mental issues. They understood also that evil is inherited in our character and all of us are capable of horrible actions when we live with bitterness, resentment, and a lack of forgiveness. The prophet Jeremiah 17:9, speaking for the one true God, said: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? Indeed, the ability to be self-centered, angry and vengeful is beyond comprehension.
Why is this happening and what can we do about it? Rev. Mirta M. Signorelli.MA. Ph.D. provides this accurate assessment: Unfortunately, the God of the Judeo Christian Bible, the same God who has blessed America throughout the centuries, is under attack and has been “expelled” from all aspects of the “public square” here, in our country. Rejection of the Godly values that made America great have been slowly removed under the banner of being “politically correct.” If you go back to the early 60’s, you will see that respect for God in America began to fade during that decade. The Supreme Court of America declared prayer in the public schools unconstitutional, the Ten Commandments were removed from public property, and women won the right to have abortions on demand. The American way of life had started slowly moving further and further away from the Ten Commandments of God. The Godly way of life had been replaced with “secularism.”
In our arrogance, and removal of reverence for the one true God in Jesus Christ, we have opened all the gates of Hell! Over the past sixty years we have taught our youth and proclaimed as a nation that life is really all about us, nothing matters but our desires, and if there is a God he can just “butt out!”
The blessings we have had as a nation have been taken for granted and we have replaced the mind and will of Jesus Christ with the human mind and will.
American Pastors must return to the Bible as their source of authority and proclaim the mind of Jesus! We must stop attempting to be friends with the secular world and recognize that human desire will always be in opposition to God’s will. We must boldly stand up to secularism, political correctness, and group-think. We must not be intimidated by those who would use violence to silence us but like the Christians living today in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia stand for Jesus even if it costs us our lives. We must repent daily of our self-will and call others to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. We must make the time and effort to disciple new believers into maturity.
We must further go to the school board meetings, the public square, the media, use our money for good while we still have time. The consequences are staggering! Our failure to speak up will doom our children and grandchildren to a chaotic evil society that will use them and then throw them away.
So what will be our answer? Will we hope someone else does it or will we stand in the gap for Jesus Christ? Will we trivialize the Bible and continue to permit T.V. shows and comedies to shape our worldview? Will we be silent as people are led to the slaughter when in fact that they have been created in the image of God and have a purpose in this world?
Today is the day you and I must make our choice. If we don’t choose to follow Jesus Christ publicly and boldly the shooting in Las Vegas will be just the beginning of continuing carnage and chaos. I urge you to join me as I join the prophets and the apostles declaring, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!”
